Soil is a vital and living ecosystem that provides critical functions supporting ecological, economical, and social well-being in Hawaii. Healthy soils are the foundation of sustainable food production, climate readiness, and diverse ecosystems, mauka to makai. We need to make sure we take care of our soil and it will take care of us.
Hawaii's soil has the potential to provide food security, mitigate climate change, and protect ecosystems mauka to makai from degradation if it is in a healthy and resilient state. The Hawaii Soil Health Tool was created to support the maintenance of this desired outcome for our soil.
This tool is designed to measure soil health allowing you to track changes over time, and to identify appropriate management strategies to deliver long-term benefits. You can see more info here
Oahu, Hawaii
Hawaii is located approximately 2,506 miles from the continental United States. About 85-90% of Hawaii's food is imported. This makes Hawaii's food resources particularly vulnerable to natural disasters and global events that might disrupt shipping and the food supply. With so much going on in the world, its not farfetched to think that container ships could be delayed due to any number of reasons (they have before).
The quickest, most community-based, most sustainable and regenerative solution is to empower and support Hawaii's small farms, which number close to 6,000, to become vital and integrated links in our local food chain, offsetting the amount of reliance we have on food from thousands of miles away. We need food that is GROWN HERE, NOT FLOWN HERE.
Hawaii has some serious problems with food security, only supporting large agricultural corporations, instead of providing assistance for small, family farms. Oahu needs to allow smaller mom-and-pop farmers to live on their agricultural lands with easy regulations. If the Oahu Dept. of Permitting & Planning (DPP) would allow small farmers to live and work on the land, it would dramatically increase the viability of a diversified food environment. The challenge will be to change the mindset of powerful agricultural corporations & lobbyists to make a change.
